Meet the author

Yushima Cherry Burks moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2009 and now resides in Alabama with her family. She began writing at age five, a skill cultivated by her father. She has always enjoyed writing, research and motivating others. Yushima has a Masters of Social Work, a Bachelors of Psychology, and an Associates in Business Administration. While her education is important, her life experience is what really helped to mold her into the person she is today.

With over a decade of experience working with families and survivors of abuse and other trauma, her nationally recognised program “JUST US” was the main program for the YWCA for seven years. Yushima’s passion is eliminating abuse on every level and helping others to understand their potential and worth.

Yushima is known for her bubbly and sometimes goofy personality, but when it comes to advocating against injustice, abuse and neglect she is all business. She is a mama bear and a loving wife. She laughs loud and fights hard for what she believes in. She has a personal relationship with God that motivates her to continue moving forward, even when things get difficult. She is learning how to enjoy life again, while overcoming adversity. Yushima Cherry Burks is a force to be reckoned with.

Picking up the Pieces to 100 Broken Promises

I am unapologetically broken; I am tired, but I keep moving. I am hurt, but I keep helping. I am delicate and strong. I am intelligent, but I don't have all of the answers. I am giving to a fault, and I am still learning how to ask for help. I have wronged others and I have been wronged. I have wonderful friends who show up when I need them the most, and I have others who only take; until they took too much. I am still figuring it all out, while loving a homicidal son, missing an estranged daughter, forgiving an abusive mother, remembering my dad – my best friend who was taken too soon – and a loving husband who didn’t know what he was getting himself into.

After forty years of disappointment, from people that I love the most, I’ve learned that the only promises I can depend on come from God. Things aren’t perfect, but I'm learning how to heal with a knife still in my back.

Picking up the Pieces to 100 Broken Promises is my guide on how to navigate life and heal in conditions that aren’t always pleasant. This book consists of a collection of events experienced from my perspective. There are intimate details that may not show myself or others in the best light, but it’s my truth and I choose to tell my story, because it's mine to tell.
